How long are the 2026 and 2027 Swiss vignettes valid?

A year's vignette is valid from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year, i.e. 14 months (Art. 8(2) NSAG).

The charge is levied for one calendar year, but its validity extends one month before and one month after. That is why two vignette years are valid at the same time every December and January. The e-vignette and the vignette sticker are valid for the same period.

There is no shorter vignette. Even if you only drive through Switzerland once a year, you need the annual vignette. More in the guide Is there a short-term vignette?.

The 2027 vignette goes on sale on 1 December 2026. If you buy from that day, you get the full 14 months until 31 January 2028.

Each annual vignette goes on sale on 1 December of the previous year, as set out in section 4 of Regulation R 15-01 issued by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS). Before that day, you can only get the current year's vignette.

If you buy the 2026 vignette in September 2026, for example, you can only use it until 31 January 2027. If your first journey is not until December 2026 or later, it makes sense to buy the 2027 vignette straight away.

The e-vignette is valid from registration, not only after delivery by post. The number plate must be registered before you use a motorway or expressway for the first time in the charge period (Art. 7a(1) NSAG).

In December and January, two vignettes are valid at the same time. If you already have the current year's vignette, you can use it until 31 January; if you are buying a new one from 1 December, choose the following year's vignette.

• Trip in December 2026: The 2026 vignette is still valid until 31 January 2027, and the 2027 vignette is already valid from 1 December 2026. Both are valid.
• Trip in January 2027: Both are still valid. The 2026 vignette expires on 31 January 2027.
• Trip beyond 31 January: From 1 February 2027, only the 2027 vignette is valid. If you are travelling with the 2026 vignette, you need the new one by then at the latest.
• New purchase in December: The 2027 vignette is valid until 31 January 2028, a year longer than the 2026 vignette.

No. Neither the e-vignette nor the vignette sticker renews itself. You need to buy a new one for each vignette year.

The FOCBS does not offer automatic annual renewal of the e-vignette. After 31 January, the old vignette has expired, even if the sticker is still on the windscreen or the number plate was registered the year before.

If you drive on a motorway or expressway without a valid vignette, you pay a CHF 200 fine and must buy the vignette on the spot. Which roads are affected is explained in the guide Driving without a vignette.

The FOCBS Via portal has a “Check validity” query. It only shows a result if “publicly viewable” was selected at the time of purchase.

For the query, you enter the country of registration and the number plate. The “publicly viewable” option can also be switched on later in the ticket. If you ordered through us, the ticket is held by us: contact our support team if you would like to use the query. Outside a roadside check, neither the FOCBS nor the police will tell you whether an e-vignette has been bought for a number plate.

Yes. You choose when the vignette should start: today, tomorrow or a later date. The form shows you the end date straight away.

The end date depends only on the vignette year, not on the day of registration. If your chosen start date is in December, the form already shows the end date of the following year's vignette, for example 31 January 2028 for a start on 1 December 2026.

After payment, you receive two emails: the order confirmation and the registration confirmation. Only drive on motorways and expressways after the registration confirmation.
