Who needs a vignette?

All motor vehicles and trailers with a total weight of up to 3.5 t each that use motorways or expressways, whether they are registered in Switzerland or abroad. This includes motorcycles.

A trailer or caravan needs its own vignette in addition to the one for the towing vehicle. Exemptions include motorcycle trailers, motorcycle sidecars and vehicles belonging to the armed forces, police, fire brigade and ambulance services (Art. 4 NSAG).

Motorhomes over 3.5 t pay the lump-sum heavy vehicle charge (PSVA) instead of the vignette. More on this in Vignette and PSVA for motorhomes and Vignette for trailers and caravans.

Where do you need a vignette?

On the motorways and expressways of the national road network, marked by green signs. You do not need a vignette on any other roads.

The vignette is required on Class I and II national highways. You can use Class III national highways and all other roads without a vignette. Which roads this covers is explained in Driving without a vignette.

The stretches between the border and the first exit at Basel-St. Louis, Rheinfelden and Kreuzlingen (motorway crossings in each case) are also vignette-free, provided you leave the motorway at the first exit.

Liechtenstein has no motorway and no roads that require a vignette. If you travel there on Swiss motorways, for example the A13, you do need the Swiss vignette.

The vignette does not cover the Great St Bernard Tunnel, the Munt la Schera Tunnel (access to Livigno) or car-carrying trains, for example at the Lötschberg, the Furka or the Vereina. Each of these has its own charge. The Gotthard road tunnel has no extra charge, and there is no general toll for mountain passes.

How long is the vignette valid?

14 months, from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year. The 2026 vignette is valid until 31 January 2027, the 2027 vignette from 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2028.

The charge covers one calendar year, plus the December before and the January after (Art. 8(2) NSAG). The following year's vignette goes on sale each year on 1 December. If you buy from that date, you get the full 14 months. The vignette does not renew automatically.

How does ordering with us work?

You enter the vehicle type, number plate and start date and pay. Right after payment we register your number plate automatically: the vignette is active immediately, or from that day if you chose a later start date.

Pay via PayPal, with a PayPal account or by credit card without a PayPal account.
First email: you receive the order confirmation.
Right after payment we automatically register your number plate in the electronic vignette system.
Second email: straight after that you receive the registration confirmation.
The vignette is active immediately, or from that day if you chose a later start date.

Check the number plate carefully before you pay: the e-vignette is only valid for the number plate you enter. Hyphens and spaces do not matter. Everything else is explained in How the e-vignette works.

How are checks carried out, and what does a violation cost?

The cantonal police and the FOCBS carry out random checks. If you drive without a valid vignette, you pay a CHF 200 fine and must also buy the vignette.

Inside Switzerland, checks are carried out by the cantonal police; at the border and in the border area, by the FOCBS (Art. 11 NSAG). For the e-vignette, they check the entry for your number plate in the FOCBS system. You do not need to carry a sticker or any proof of purchase. The fine is a fixed CHF 200 (Art. 14(1) NSAG). If neither the towing vehicle nor the trailer of a combination has a vignette, the fine is charged twice. If you are not resident in Switzerland and dispute the fine or do not pay it, you must pay a deposit of the amount or provide security (Art. 12 NSAG).

The number plate must be registered before you use a motorway or expressway for the first time in the charge period (Art. 7a(1) NSAG).

E-vignette or vignette sticker?

Both are valid for the same period. The sticker is tied to the vehicle, the e-vignette to the number plate.

Do I need a vignette for Switzerland?

When can I start driving after ordering?

Immediately after buying. We register your number plate automatically right after payment, and you receive the registration confirmation by email straight after. If you chose a later start date, the vignette is valid from that day.

Do I need to carry a confirmation?

No. During a check, the entry for your number plate in the FOCBS system is checked. You do not need a sticker or any proof of purchase in the vehicle.

Will I receive the vignette by post?

No. The e-vignette is not a sticker but an entry for your number plate in the FOCBS system. It is valid from registration, not only once something has arrived by post. You receive the confirmations by email.

What if I made a typo in the number plate?

Contact our support team straight away with your order number. An input error can only be corrected once, and for foreign number plates only within 24 hours of registration.

Is there a vignette for just a few days?

No. Switzerland only has the annual vignette, even for a single transit journey. It is valid for 14 months, from 1 December of the previous year to 31 January of the following year. More: Is there a short-term vignette?
