Is my e-vignette valid? How to check

The Via portal of the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) has a “Check validity” query: you enter the country of registration and the number plate. It only returns a result for e-vignettes registered as “publicly viewable”. Regardless of this, your registration confirmation by email is your own proof.

How does the “Check validity” query work?

In the FOCBS Via portal, you select the country of registration and enter the number plate. The query shows whether a valid e-vignette exists for this number plate, provided it is registered as “publicly viewable”.

The basis is Art. 7b NSAG: whoever registers the number plate can consent to the fact that the charge has been paid being publicly retrievable. The query only accesses e-vignettes with this consent. So if it finds nothing, that does not necessarily mean that there is no e-vignette.

According to the FOCBS, the query is useful, for example, with a borrowed vehicle or if you share a car with others. Everyone involved can then see whether an e-vignette already exists for the number plate. The system does not technically prevent a duplicate purchase.

How does my e-vignette become “publicly viewable”?

The option can also be switched on and off later in the e-vignette ticket. If you ordered through us, this ticket is held by us: write to our support team if you want the query to show your e-vignette.

In the Via portal, the function is called “Change public visibility”. It is in the ticket created at registration. Please give us your order number and the number plate.

After that, the only thing that is publicly retrievable is that the charge has been paid for the number plate (Art. 7b NSAG).

What proof do I have without the public query?

Your registration confirmation by email. It confirms that we have registered your number plate in the electronic vignette system.

You do not need to carry the email or a printout: during a check, the entry for the number plate in the FOCBS system is checked. Keep the email anyway, for example in case of questions or if a typo needs to be corrected.

If you have only received the order confirmation, the registration is not yet complete. In that case, do not drive on motorways and expressways yet. Check your spam folder, and contact support if the registration confirmation is missing.

Can the FOCBS or the police tell me whether my number plate is registered?

No. The FOCBS and the police only check whether an e-vignette has been bought for a number plate as part of a roadside check. Outside of that, they do not provide any information on this.

That leaves you two options: the query in the Via portal, if the e-vignette has been enabled for it, and your registration confirmation. For orders placed through us, our support team can also give you information about your registration.

What should I check before I set off?

Whether the number plate, country of registration and period of your order match your vehicle and your trip. The e-vignette is only valid for exactly the number plate that was registered.

  • Number plate: Compare it with the plate character by character, especially O and 0 and I and 1. Hyphens and spaces do not matter.
  • Country of registration: It must be the country in which the vehicle is registered.
  • Vignette year: The 2026 vignette is valid until 31 January 2027, the 2027 vignette from 1 December 2026 to 31 January 2028. If your trip continues beyond 31 January, you need the new year's vignette. Details in the guide Vignette validity.
  • Start date: Only drive on motorways and expressways from the start date you chose and only after the registration confirmation.
  • Trailer: A trailer or caravan up to 3.5 t needs its own vignette registered to its own number plate.

What do I do if I spot a mistake?

Contact our support team straight away. A number plate entered incorrectly can only be corrected once, and for foreign number plates only within 24 hours of registration.

Give your order number, the number plate you entered and the correct one. As long as an incorrect number plate is registered, the e-vignette is not valid for your vehicle.

What applies with a new number plate or a change of vehicle is explained in the guide Changing or correcting your number plate.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't the query find my e-vignette?

The query only accesses e-vignettes registered as “publicly viewable”. If the option is switched off, it will not find the e-vignette, even if it is valid. Also check that the country of registration and the number plate are correct.

Do I need to print out the registration confirmation?

No. What is checked is the entry for the number plate in the FOCBS system; you do not need to carry any proof.

What can others see if my e-vignette is publicly viewable?

The query only shows whether a valid e-vignette exists for the number plate. Under Art. 7b NSAG, the only thing that is publicly retrievable is that the charge has been paid.

Can I check whether my rental car already has an e-vignette?

With the query in the Via portal, only if the e-vignette is registered as “publicly viewable”. Otherwise, ask the rental company. More in the guide Vignette for rental cars.
